Seminole Rottweiler Club of
North Central Florida
Code of Ethics
The Seminole Rottweiler Club of North Central Florida Constitution and By-Laws, Article I, Section 2, paragraphs (a), (b), (c), (d) and (e) states:
The objects of the Club shall be:
(a) to encourage and promote the quality breeding of purebred Rottweilers and to do all possible to bring their natural qualities to perfection;
(b) to urge members and breeders to accept the Standard of the Breed as approved by the American Kennel Club as the only standard of excellence by which Rottweilers shall be judged;
(c) to do all in its power to protect and advance the interests of the breed by encouraging sportsmanlike competition at all dog events;
(d) to conduct sanctioned matches, licensed specialty shows, obedience trials and any other event for which the club is eligible under the Rules and Regulations of the American Kennel Club.
(d) to protect the right to own the Rottweiler breed by working vigilantly to fight Breed Specific Legislation and to promote laws that are non-breed specific.
To elaborate on these five Constitutional statements, all members are required to abide by the following Code of Ethics:
The Rottweiler is above all a working dog and must exhibit the temperament, intelligence and structure of a working companion. The physical appearance should be as described in the current AKC Rottweiler Standard.
Study and strive to conserve and improve the breed in structure, health, temperament and working ability, never sacrificing one for the other.
Encourage working titles to retain the breed’s correct working temperament. Encourage the showing of future breeding animals in the conformation ring, keeping in mind that the purpose of such shows is to improve the breed by objective evaluation of the animals in competition according to the AKC Rottweiler Standard.
In accord with the above, I agree to breed discriminately and only with the strong possibility of finding responsible homes for the resulting puppies. I will sell to responsible persons and not deal with unethical breeders or knowingly deal with pet shops, wholesales, catalogue houses or their commercial sources.
Plan all litters with the goal of improving the Breed giving consideration to individual health benefits and concerns.
Breed only mature dogs/bitches which are no less than 2 years of age, have passed all required health tests (see requirements below), have stable temperament and no disqualifying physical faults according to the AKC Rottweiler Standard (i.e., entropion, ectropion, overshot, undershot, wry mouth, 2 or more missing teeth, unilateral cryptorchid or cryptorchid males, long coat, any base color other than black, absence of all markings). Any dogs/bitches that are a resident of the United States, as well as any litters whelped here, must be AKC registered. Any dogs/bitches residing outside the United States used for breeding must meet all the requirements to be eligible for registration with AKC (http://www.akc.org/rules/ special_registry_services.cfm#foreign). EXCEPTION: Missing Teeth: A dog/bitch which is missing more than one adult tooth may be bred only if the owner provides proof of correct natural adult dentition prior to the loss of a second tooth. Such proof must be obtained prior to the loss of a second tooth and must include a sworn notarized statement signed by an independent licensed Veterinarian documenting the dog’s/bitch’s registered name and permanent ID and stating the condition of the adult dentition at the time of examination, preferably with verification by dental x-rays. Testicles:A sworn notarized statement signed by an independent licensed Veterinarian documenting the dog’s registered name and permanent ID and stating the condition at the time of examination is required should a dog loose a testicle due to injury disease or age. In both cases, the Veterinarian must have no ownership interest in the dog/bitch or any close relationship with its owners or breeders.
In the interest of full disclosure of any identified health issues, any dogs/bitches to be bred, (born after January 1, 2008) must have a CHIC certificate which provides a source of health information for owners, breeders, and scientists that will assist in breeding healthy dogs/bitches. CHIC is meant to encourage health testing and sharing of all results, normal and abnormal, so that more informed breeding decisions can be made in an overall effort to reduce the incidence of genetic disease and improve canine health. CHIC requires permanent identification (Microchip or Tattoo) and requires that certain evaluations are done and results, released, regardless of pass or failure. (See www.caninehealthinfo.org for required Rottweiler evaluations. Because a CHIC # requires CERF, dogs/bitches residing outside of the United States would be exempt.
Dogs/bitches residing in the United States used for/bred to, either via a natural, fresh or frozen semen breeding must have OFA certified hips. Dogs/bitches residing outside the United States must have hip clearances from their country of residence and be HD free.
Dogs/bitches used for/bred to, either via a natural, fresh or frozen semen breeding (born after January 1, 2008) must be OFA Cardiac “Normal” at 2 years of age or older, including all dogs/bitches residing outside the United States. It is strongly recommended that the evaluation be performed by a Board Certified Cardiologist.
Dogs/bitches used for/bred to, either via a natural, fresh or frozen semen breeding (born after January 1, 2008) must have a CERF (Canine Eye Research Foundation) certification completed at 2 years of age or older, and within 3 years of the breeding. In the case of frozen semen being used from a dog born after January 1, 2008, the certification must have been within 3 years of the date of collection. CERF is not required on dogs/bitches residing outside the United States; however the dogs/bitches would be required to have certification from EVCO (European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists) or another recognized registry.
Dogs/Bitches being imported into the United States must have all of the above required health clearances BEFORE being used for breeding.
Dogs/Bitches born BEFORE January 1, 2008 used for/bred to, either via a natural, fresh or frozen semen must conform to the following:
No less than 2 years of age
healthy with stable temperament
no disqualifying physical faults per the AKC Rottweiler Standard
OFA certified hips or HD-free hips as certified by foreign counterparts of the OFA at no less than 24 months of age
imports must have OFA hip certification within 6 months after arrival in the United States
It is strongly recommended to breed only OFA normal elbows to normal elbows, or Grade 1 DJD to normal in an attempt to lower the incidence of elbow dysplasia
It is strongly recommended that all dogs/bitches, especially those used for breeding, have a CGC certification (Canine Good Citizen), ATTS certification (American Temperament Test Society), or BST (Breed Suitability Test).
If a bitch is bred consecutively; it shall be on no more than 2 consecutive seasons. Bitches bred to more than 1 sire during a single season must adhere to the AKC regulations (http://www.akc.org/ dna/multisire.cfm).
Offer at stud, with a signed written contract, only mature (no less than 2 years of age) healthy dogs, free of communicable diseases, and meeting all of the above requirements. Refuse stud service to any bitch not meeting the same requirements.
It is strongly recommended that Dogs be limited to 24 or fewer breedings (resulting in 3 or more live puppies) in a 12 month period.
As a breeder I acknowledge the LIFETIME responsibility for any puppy produced by my brood bitch or stud dog. I understand my responsibility to provide suitable and stable environments that protect each puppy’s physical and emotional well-being. This includes helping to relocate to a new home, that puppy or adult which the owner is unable/unwilling to keep; or taking that puppy or adult back. Any provisions for refunds or reimbursement of expenses shall be handled in the written and signed contract between the breeder and owner. Unless required to do so by law, no puppy or adult dog/bitch bred or owned by a SRCGT member shall be disposed of in an animal shelter or pound or knowingly be allowed to remain in the care of a rescue organization. Enforcement of this paragraph would require that both the breeder and the stud dog owner failed to respond to notification in writing of the plight of the puppy/adult dog/bitch in harms way.
Maintain the highest possible standards of health, cleanliness, and care for my dogs/bitches, including proper veterinary care. Dogs/bitches shall be contained within safe restrictions when the breeder/owner cannot personally supervise their safety. I further agree that proper health care includes social contact with people and exposure to the outside world.
Any docking of tails shall be done within 7 days of birth. After 7 days tails may only be docked as a result of a medical necessity.
Sell all dogs with a signed, written contract. All dogs/bitches/puppies sold must be guaranteed (to the best of my ability) to be in a healthy condition, including adequate protection against known diseases.
Keep and pass on to buyers accurate health, breeding and registration records and pedigree records of at least 3 generations.
Registration papers may be withheld or breeder’s right retained only by mutual agreement in writing, signed by both parties.
Require that all Rottweilers not purchased as show and breeding stock be made incapable of reproducing, and require that limited AKC registration forms be provided, or that registration papers be withheld until a veterinarian certificate is received as proof of sterilization.
I will not release puppies before they are eight weeks of age, and only with full knowledge that they are healthy and have had the required medical inoculations and care.
I agree that my advertising, oral and written, shall be factual and not worded so as to attract undesirable buyers, or to encourage the raising of purebred Rottweilers as an easy money scheme. No price may be given in advertising Rottweilers.
VI. GENERAL CONDUCT AND SPORTSMANSHIP
Choose names for AKC registration which do not use prefixes or kennel names associated with other recognized breeders of Rottweilers in the U.S., Canada, Germany, or any other foreign country, unless written permission is obtained from the original user of the name.
Observe the highest standards of sportsmanship and good will at shows and trials and any other event involving Rottweilers. Conduct myself at all times in a manner which will reflect credit upon SRCGT, me and the breed, regardless of the location or circumstances, whether attending as an exhibitor or spectator. It is recommended that this conduct follow through at club meetings.
Assist all newcomers to the breed so that they may be guided in the ways that can best conserve and improve the Rottweiler.
I have read and understand that I shall be required to abide by the above Code of Ethics in all ways. I understand that this Code of Ethics is applicable to all dogs owned, co-owned or leased by or from me. I further agree to abide by the recommended practices to the best of my ability.
I understand and agree that upon receipt of sufficient written proof of violations of this Code of Ethics, the Board of Directors will proceed according to the Constitution of the Seminole Rottweiler of North Central Florida, Article VI (Discipline).
